# Xing Yi Quan

**形意拳 • Form and Intention**

An internal style based on the union of form and intention, with restrained and effective execution.

The origins of **Xing Yi Quan** are no clearer than those of many other styles and are also surrounded by legendary stories. The tradition is nevertheless associated with **Ji Longfeng**, a Kung Fu expert from the first half of the seventeenth century.

Three main branches emerged in the eighteenth century: **Shanxi**, which claims a direct link with Ji Longfeng; **Henan**, associated with **Ma Xueli** and ten animal techniques; and **Hebei**, known for training bodyguards and caravan escorts. All Xing Yi schools share clear characteristics.

The San Ti Shi stance is specific to the style, with most of the weight initially resting on the rear leg. Power travels from that leg into the fist and returns to the starting position.

Students begin with the five fundamental movements, Wuxing or Wuquan, associated with the five Taoist elements: Beng (wood), Pi (metal), Heng (earth), Pao (fire) and Zuan (water).
